Family farm selling grass-fed beef and pasture-raised chicken from Minnesota's Northwoods.
Helstrom Farms is a multi-generational family farm rooted in land first claimed south of Hibbing in 1904. Today, Mike and Jason Helstrom raise grass-fed beef cattle and pasture-raised chickens, selling individual cuts, bulk beef packages (1/8, 1/4, and sampler options), grass-fed beef sticks, and roasts through an online shop. The farm shifted away from conventional methods after attending a sustainable farming conference, where the practice of mob-grazing changed the direction of the operation entirely. The herd is raised through natural selection to adapt specifically to the farm's environment, with no reliance on costly outside inputs. Learn more on their About Page.
Helstrom Farms raises its cattle using mob-grazing, a rotational method in which cattle are moved to a new segment of land every 12 hours to mimic the grazing patterns of bison on North American prairies. This keeps root systems intact, builds soil biology, and reduces erosion. The farm uses no pesticides, growth hormones, antibiotics, artificial supplements, or GMO feed in its cattle or chicken production. Pasture-raised chickens are raised free-range and eat using their natural scratch-and-peck instincts in an outdoor environment. The farm markets its products under the label True Northwoods Organic, which it notes is not affiliated with the USDA Certified Organic label. Fertilizers, hormones, and pharmaceutical inputs were removed from the operation after the farm transitioned to holistic farming practices.
