Overview
Family farm growing vegetables, flowers, meat, and eggs in the Blue Ridge Mountains.
Thornfield Farm is a multi-generation family farm on nearly 300 acres of pasture land in Botetourt County, started by Susanna Thornton in 2015 on land her father has farmed since he was seventeen. We grow vegetables, cut flowers, and raise Angus beef, St. Croix sheep, and laying hens for eggs. You can find us at three weekly farm stands in Roanoke and on the farm itself, or join our farm share (CSA) program, which runs for more than 30 weeks in season and continues through winter for members. We also grow flowers for weddings and events. Each year we donate produce to food access partners in Roanoke and contribute 20% of our total market sales to LEAP, a local nonprofit working toward equitable food systems. Learn more on their About Page.
Our vegetables are Certified Naturally Grown (CNG), meaning we do not use synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides, or GMOs. We focus on crop rotation and cover cropping to build organic matter and support soil biology. Pest management starts with soil health; we use an organic pesticide only as a last resort. Our Angus beef cattle are raised primarily on grass and forage, supplemented with locally milled feed, and have been a closed herd whose core purpose is to graze and maintain our pastures. Our laying hens have managed, rotating access to pasture, which lets them forage for insects and plants in line with their natural instincts. We raise St. Croix sheep, a heritage hair-sheep breed prized for tender, flavorful meat, and process ram-lambs for market while growing the breeding flock.
