Austin sits inside a working foodshed: a farm on the east side of town, ranches and dairies within a couple of hours' drive, and farmers markets every weekend. This guide follows that food from the kitchens downtown that cook with it, out to the farms that grow it, through the markets that sell it, and back to the bakers, butchers and cheesemongers who turn it into something you can carry home.
Every place here is on Food Done Better, so you can see what each one grows or sources, how they do it, and when they're open.
Downtown
Start close in. Central Austin has a deep bench of farm-to-table kitchens, and the good ones are specific about where their food comes from. Odd Duck cooks over a wood-fired grill from what local farms bring in, and Emmer & Rye builds its menu around heirloom grains and whole-animal butchery. Dish Society is the easy all-day option, with locally sourced brunch, lunch and supper.
For groceries, Wheatsville Food Co-op stocks organic produce and locally sourced meat, and The Well cooks gluten-free, seed-oil-free plates from locally sourced produce.
The Foodshed
Austin's farms start closer than you'd think. Boggy Creek Farm Stand sells vegetables, eggs and pantry goods from a five-acre regenerative farm on the east side, about 4 km from downtown.
Farther out are ranches and dairies that sell direct: Richardson Farms in Rockdale, Belle Vie Farm and Kitchen in Thrall for duck, pork and charcuterie, and The Jersey Barnyard near La Grange for raw milk and cheese. Southwest in Wimberley, Wild Candy Farm grows vegetables and microgreens on 51 acres of the Hill Country.
Farmers Markets
There's a farmers market somewhere in Austin every weekend, and several run year-round. Barton Creek Farmers Market is the city's original open-air market, and Texas Farmers' Market at Mueller brings more than 120 vendors on Sundays.
The SFC markets downtown and at Sunset Valley are producer-only, so the person behind the table grew, raised or made what they're selling.

Artisans & Makers
The makers are where Austin's food gets its character. Dai Due is a butcher shop and supper club built entirely on regional ingredients, and Radius Butcher & Grocery is a whole-animal butcher and grocery stocking local Texas meat.
Antonelli's Cheese Shop in Hyde Park runs tastings and a cheese club. Jinx Bread bakes naturally leavened loaves from heirloom wheat, and out in Dripping Springs, Abby Jane Bakeshop bakes with stone-milled, organic heritage-grain flours.
There’s a lot more Austin on the map.
