Family-owned farm and packing operation growing fresh Texas greens, herbs, and onions
Rio Fresh is a third-generation, family-owned farm and packing operation that has been growing produce in the Rio Grande Valley for over 75 years. Founded in 1970 by a group of farmers committed to growing, packing, and shipping their own produce, the business is now entirely owned by members of the Carl and Wilma Schuster family. We grow more than 30 varieties of fresh Texas greens, herbs, and onions across nearly 4,000 acres, with our season running October through May. We offer both conventional and certified organic crops, with the organic program built and managed in-house. Twelve second- and third-generation family members currently work at the shed or on the farm, and our goal is to pass the operation on to a fourth generation.
We grow, pack, and ship produce directly from our own fields to our customers. We use drip tape irrigation across the farm, which reduces the water needed to irrigate our crops, and all of our fields are laser leveled to further conserve water. We practice crop rotation, consistently rotating families of crops to reduce the buildup of harmful pathogens in the soil. During the off-season we plant corn, grain, and soybeans to maximize humus levels and keep our soil nutrient-rich. Our organic program is operated under separate certified-organic oversight and is managed to meet the growing retailer demand for both conventional and organic supply.
