Farmstead raw milk cheese, cave-aged on the farm since 2000.
Veldhuizen Cheese is a family-operated farmstead creamery that has been making raw milk cheese since January 2000. Four generations of the family take part in the operation. We currently offer over 20 varieties of raw milk cheese, made exclusively from the milk of our own herd of Jersey and Guernsey cows and our sheep flock. The sheep program, started in 2015 by our daughter Rachael, produces pure sheep milk cheeses as well as blended cow-and-sheep varieties. Our cheeses are aged in a cave we built into the side of a hill, with aging ranging from two months to two years or beyond. We also offer cheese making and farm tours, and a quarterly Cheese Club with boxes released four times a year. Learn more on their About Page.
Only milk from our own animals is used: no purchased milk ever enters the creamery. The milk is never heated above 100 degrees, preserving natural enzymes and beneficial bacteria, and is never homogenized, pasteurized, or separated. On cheese making mornings the fresh milk is piped directly from the barn into the vat. Our cheese contains no artificial ingredients, flavors, additives, or preservatives. Each wheel is hand-coated and labeled, or washed by hand with brine to form a natural rind. On the farming side, we plant crops for the cows to graze on year-round, use no chemicals or insecticides, and incorporate practices designed to conserve water and protect the natural microbes in the soil.
